Thoughts on Final Fantasy 13

Since this game came out I've read through a plethora of reviews, some touting this game as the latest masterpiece from Square, others dragging it through the mud in everyway you can imagine. Seeing as how I've finally played the game for myself I wanted to toss in my two cents worth over a series of points.

1. This game is NOT for everyone. If you enjoy exploration, a free sense of travel where you control your own unique experiance through the game world then go ahead and sit this one out. The game is linear to a fault (IMO) and, generally speaking, everyone will experiance the same game at the same pace, for the same amount of time.

2. You control one character, and die if that character is KOed. This was a huge turn off for me. What are my other characters even there for? Can they not handle scripting the AI to send a pick me up my way? Am I playing an action adventure game or an RPG? It just smacks of poor decision making on squares part.

3. The game is GORGEOUS. Seriously, the game is beautiful and square did their dead level best to wow us with just how detailed everything can be. On the flip side, it seems like they went to an awful lot of trouble to create a world only to have us experiance a fraction of it. Whats the point of that?

4. Why, OH WHY, are my summons TRANSFORMERS?! Speaking of summons why does every character get one when you can only control YOUR character? The other summons are wasted, as you have to swap out the leader of the party to access the other summons you've collected. You can't use all three in a battle, so why even have the option?

5. The character development is rather stilted, generating some rather two dimensional characters with a very predictable personality. Now granted, most RPGs have 2-D characters, but after feasting on the character development offered up in ME1 and 2, Knights of the old republic 1 and 2, and Dragon Age my standards for characters in RPGs has exploded to a new high. I want my characters to all have a story I can interact with so I can get to know that character better, I want to know what drives them, and even have the option of romance or (what I'd like to see) Develope an active hatred in certain characters. Maybe hating on a character could drive them away, becoming an optional boss battle down the road?

Overall I'm rather disappointed in FF13. Despite the visuals, and a rather slick battle system (I would like to see this refined for multi-character control, or give me an option to control only their big moves like summons) the game fell short on to many fronts for me to complete it.
